And so, with the V-Strom showing no signs of slowing (and recently conquering some truly gnarly off-road work as part of a 700+ mile weekend in Wales), I began to talk myself into buying a very different kind of motorcycle. And yet, while many had facets that impressed, it was the experience of riding the bright green Ninja that stuck with me. I’ve tested a number of different bikes over the last couple of years, many considered as speculative replacements for my trusty V-Strom in anticipation of it eventually succumbing to its advancing mileage. After I rode it, recommended that she buy one.Įvery now and again, someone takes my advice and buys a motorcycle I endorse The Ninja had more than enough power to satisfy on the road but tuned to deliver endlessly tractable grunt straight off idle with all the smoothness of a well-balanced inline-four. A big tank, adjustable windshield, and huge lockable panniers meant it could also double up as a touring mount, an area where her Fireblade was inevitably compromised. As it happened, I loved it – Superbike looks, but far more upright ergonomics, with a wide, comfortable seat and every modern amenity you could ask for. My partner was considering one as a more modern, more practical, and more comfortable replacement for her long-serving 2002 Honda Fireblade 954, and my opinion was sought. Regular readers will recall that I tried out Kawasaki’s freshly updated and newly-named Ninja 1000SX last summer. It also didn’t help that its replacement was already parked in the garage. I’m a practical motorcyclist, and my bikes need to be at least a little practical or they gather dust. But I’m no collector every bike I own has to justify its annual bills, and I can’t afford to keep a bike simply for the sake of a couple of short rides a year. In a world of electronic rider aids and ride-by-wire throttles we’ll never see another bike like it. So wonderfully light and minimalist, with nothing wasted or spare. What finally cemented my decision to let go of my well-loved Triumph was that first post-lockdown ride in spring. Lockable hard luggage is really, really nice to have. Strapping a tailpack to a pillion seat gets tiresome quickly. The last time a friend and I took our Street Triples to the Swiss Alps we both came away agreeing that, while adventure bikes would’ve given up a little bit of pure entertainment value against the raucous sporty triples, they would have repaid that debt a hundred fold in significantly better comfort, convenience, and luggage capacity. And while heading further afield in search of smoother tarmac often rewarded me with memorable riding experiences, there was no getting away from the fact that actually getting to those far-flung roads was never a lot of fun. Even with a fully custom and regularly-serviced suspension the Triumph made for a very bumpy ride, and I inevitably ended up wishing I’d picked up the keys to the V-Strom instead. The problem is that the roads where I live in Northampton, UK are the opposite of smooth continental tarmac. If ever my 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 650 or Yamaha T-Max 530 started feeling too sensible, I could take the Triumph out for a spin and sate that particular thirst in short order. In theory, the Triumph fit perfectly into my three-bike garage with its unique selling point of light weight and a unique and raucous engine. The pandemic didn’t help, but even before the world ground to a halt the annual mileage on my featherweight naked bike was frankly pitiful. Last time I had to choose between a Triumph Street Triple R and a Kawasaki Z1000SX, the Triumph won…Īfter eight years, my 40,000-mile Triumph Street Triple R has gone to a new home.

EF lenses have an image circle large enough to cover the full- frame format of film and some digital models. A range of EF lenses was introduced at the same time and the number has increased over the years. When Canon introduced the EOS camera system back in 1987 it featured a new lens mount – the EF mount (short for ‘electro-focus’). This is much more useful than knowing the crop factor. These are the benchmarks for identifying lens types.Ī focal length greater than the standard is telephoto and a focal length less than the standard is wide-angle. On an APS-C camera it is around 27mm (43mm divided by 1.6). On a full-frame camera this is 43mm – and so typically a 50mm is regarded as a standard lens for full-frame purposes. Our advice? Forget about crop factors! And extended reach, too!Ī standard focal length for a camera is usually taken as the diagonal of the image frame. But that is not a common situation for most of us, so it is best just to get used to the view given by a lens on your camera. So essentially this means that if you have a full-frame and an APS-C camera side by side, you need a longer focal length lens on the full-frame camera to see the same view as the APS-C camera. Similarly, the full frame sensor is 1.3x larger than the APS-H sensor.) The maths… We multiply because the full-frame sensor is 1.6 times bigger than the APS-C sized sensor. The rest of the image falls outside the area of the APS-C sensor.įACT: All lenses produce circular images, but the sensor (or film negative) only collects the data that falls onto its rectangular surface area.Ī crop factor of 1.6x – often talked about with APS-C cameras – can be explained like this: If you are using a 50mm lens on an APS-C camera and you want to shoot the same scene with the same field-of-view with a full-frame camera you need a focal length of 50 x 1.6, which is 80mm. There is no change to the image created by the lens – it’s simply that the smaller sensor only captures the central area of the image. You could get an identical result by enlarging and cropping the full-frame image. It is a magnification effect, not a change of focal length. In fact, the APS-C image has been enlarged more than the full-frame image to match the display size. The result from the APS-C sensor is shown above and appears to show an increased telephoto effect. When you come to display an image to fill a computer screen or a print, the result from the full-frame sensor is shown above. The field-of-view is narrower, but nothing else changes. The end result is a smaller area captured, but exactly the same as the central area of the full frame image. An APS-C camera only records a part of the full image (as shown by the white box on the central image). A full-frame camera captures the full image. The original shot was taken with an EF 400mm lens. The focal length might not change, but what does change is the field-of-view. Use the same lens on a full frame camera and an APS-C camera, and you end up with results like those below. It doesn’t.įACT: Focal length is a characteristic of the lens and is not affected by the camera or sensor size. There is a lot of confusion about crop factors, extended reach and telephoto effects when using lenses on APS-C cameras.įirst, let’s dispel the myth that the focal length of a lens changes when switched between a full-frame camera and an APS-C camera. So what does this all mean for your photography? Crop refers to the fact that the image you get with the smaller sensor is a cropped part of the image obtained with the full frame sensor. The main reason for the introduction of the smaller sensor was cost – full frame sensors are expensive. Then, in 2000, along came a camera with an APS-C 'crop' sensor – the EOS D30. EF lenses, like the FD lens system that went before, gave full coverage to 35mm EOS film cameras, then subsequently full-frame – 36 x 24mm sensor – digital cameras. The EF lens mount was introduced in the same year that the EOS was announced – 1987. Terms like ‘crop factor’, 'extra reach’ and ‘equivalent focal length’ just aren’t helpful. This is exactly what happened – as far as we’re concerned – when Canon introduced the EF-S lens mount. Sometimes when an attempt is made to simplify or explain a term or reference point, it can end up complicating the situation. A few quirks aside, it's certainly one of the more performant games I've tried on the Deck recently. You can happily play Overwatch 2 on the Steam Deck at medium settings, 1280 x 800 resolution and enjoy 60 FPS (or a little below at times) gameplay. Performance on the whole is excellent though. The fix for this is to switch to Proton Experimental, then all works well. I've also already hit an interesting issue where I touched the display on the Deck and the game then thought I was using a keyboard and mouse, also refusing then to react to the controller inputs. You'll get some jank while the shaders are getting figured out. I've never played Overwatch 2 despite having some hours in the first game, but I've installed it on my Deck this morning just because it's there, and it's easy. And who knows, maybe Blizzard will even see an uptick in players. Techy folks would have no problem with this, but would more casual players even know it was a possibility?įor everything you can do with the Steam Deck, just being able to install games through the native UI is far superior. Engineers can traverse vents like Impostors, albeit to a limited capacity. Effectively, spectators and ghosts may see and pass through walls, follow players or other ghosts, and chat with other ghosts.Ī November 2021 update added additional specialized roles to the game: Crewmates can also be Engineers, Scientists, or Guardian Angels. Players who are killed or ejected become ghosts, which can still perform tasks (Crewmates) or sabotages (Impostors) but are otherwise unable to be seen by or interact with living players. Players then vote for who they believe is an Impostor, if a plurality vote is obtained, the player who received the most votes is "ejected" from the game. Impostors can be identified beyond reasonable doubt if they are seen venting or killing a Crewmate, but ultimately players must weigh the veracity or value of each other's statements. During meetings, players discuss-via the in-game text chat or an external voice chat application such as Discord -who they believe to be Impostors based on available witness testimonies, with Impostors lying to hide their identity or falsely accusing other players. Īny living player may call a group meeting by reporting a dead body, or by pressing an Emergency Meeting button. As Impostors cannot perform tasks, Crewmates can use visual tasks to confirm their identity to nearby Crewmates. In addition, certain "visual tasks" provide animated cues, such as scanning oneself in the Skeld's medbay. To help Crewmates identify Impostors, there are various surveillance systems on each map, such as security cameras on The Skeld, a door log system with sensors in MIRA HQ, and a vitals indicator in Polus that shows the living status of all players. Impostors may enter and traverse ventilation ducts (commonly known as "venting"), and kill nearby Crewmates. Impostors, however, can perform sabotages, ranging from minor (such as disabling lights, limiting the Crewmates' vision) to critical (such as disabling oxygen generators), requiring immediate counteraction by Crewmates to prevent their deaths. Impostors cannot complete tasks but may pretend to perform "fake" tasks to feign appearance as legitimate Crewmates. At the start of the game, Crewmates are assigned "tasks" to complete around the map in the form of minigames, minipuzzles, and simple toggles, mostly consisting of maintenance work on vital systems such as fixing wires and downloading data. Impostors can likewise win in two ways: either by killing or ejecting all Crewmates, or by sabotaging a critical system on the map (provided the Crewmates do not resolve it in time). The Crewmates can win the game one of two ways: either by completing all assigned tasks or by ejecting all Impostors. As of 2021, four playable maps are available: a spaceship called "The Skeld", an office building called "MIRA HQ", a planet base called "Polus", or "The Airship", a setting from Innersloth's Henry Stickmin series. Up to three players are randomly and secretly chosen to be the Impostors each round. Any player, including the killer, can report the dead body and trigger a meeting.Īmong Us is a multiplayer game for four to fifteen players. White's vision of the pink player has been partially obscured by the wall. Gameplay In this gameplay screenshot of the original map, The Skeld, the white Impostor has killed the blue Crewmate. The game and its stylized characters have been the subject of various internet memes. It received favorable reviews from critics for fun and entertaining gameplay. While the game was initially released in 2018 to little mainstream attention, it received a massive rise in popularity in 2020 due to many Twitch streamers and YouTubers playing it during the COVID-19 pandemic. Crewmates work to complete assigned tasks in the game while identifying and voting out suspected Impostors (who appear identical to Crewmates) using social deduction, while Impostors have the objective of killing the Crewmates. Each player takes on one of two roles: most are Crewmates, but a small number are Impostors. A virtual reality adaptation, Among Us VR, was released on November 10, 2022.Īmong Us takes place in space-themed settings where players are colorful, armless cartoon astronauts. I realize that much of this inventory relates to Tesla ramping up production faster than their competitors, but are other automakers having sales issues? View all comments How are sales doing for other automakers? What does demand look like for other automakers Electrek’s TakeĮveryone talks about inventory and Tesla's price cuts but where's the context? Model Y inventory was cut in half to about just 300 units following the two most recent price cuts. The only good news is that the price cuts appear to have worked for the Model Y, which is now Tesla’s best-selling vehicle. Model 3 also appears to start being a problem with inventory jumping 50% over the second half of the month despite the recent price cuts. The automaker appears to be stuck with over 1,200 Model X vehicles on inventory in the US. Interestingly, Tesla’s biggest problem appears to be the Model X: We can see a big drop at the end of the quarter and after Tesla’s second-to-most recent price drop, but despite a second price drop this month, the inventory appears to keep climbing. Sure enough, new inventory data, which doesn’t include vehicles in transit, tracked by Matt Jung shows that Tesla’s new inventory vehicles in the US have reached a new high of around 2,600 vehicles: The automaker tried to justify it with vehicles in transit, but it’s hard to believe there were that many vehicles in transit at the end of the quarter. Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to track these metrics, but there’s a way to track Tesla’s inventory in the US, which can give us a general idea.Īt the end of last quarter, Tesla disclosed having 15 days’ worth of inventory, which has been its highest in years. In some cases, prices were cut by over 20%.ĭuring its earnings call last week, the automaker made it clear that it is monitoring new orders daily against production capacity, and it plans to continue adjusting prices in order to create the demand to match the production rate. Since the beginning of the year, Tesla has consistently reduced prices of its electric vehicles in the US to create more demand. Tesla’s (TSLA) inventory in the US has reached a new high, which is worrisome at this time in the quarter, and it is pointing to price cuts maybe not working as well as the automaker intended.
